Climate Change & Renewable Energy Policy
GREENHOUSE GAS LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT
Argonne National Lab/DOE
- TSS conducted a Life Cycle Assessment, in collaboration with the Argonne National Lab, of the conversion of rice straw into ethyl lactate, a biodegradable solvent. Both criteria pollutants and Greenhouse Gas emissions were evaluated in the assessment.
Sierra Nevada Conservancy
- TSS has provided greenhouse gas life cycle analysis for community-scale biomass power generation in communities across the Sierra Nevada mountains.
USDA Forest Service – Pacific Southwest Research Station
- TSS was retained by the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Research Station as part of a research team that assessed the environmental and societal benefits of biomass power generation.
RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY AND GAS POLICY
Bioenergy Association of California
- TSS, a founding member of the Bioenergy Association of California, plays an active role in evaluating California Energy Commission and California Public Utility Commission proceedings.
Placer County Air Pollution Control District
- TSS has been retained by the Placer County Air Pollution Control District as part of a research team that seeks to monetize the societal benefits of forest biomass power and thermal generation. TSS has been co-author of several peer-reviewed reports and articles produced by the Placer County APCD.
Sierra Energy
- TSS conducted a detailed review of the regulatory and statutory requirements for the SE gasification system in the conversion of a variety of waste streams, including woody biomass, municipal solid waste, auto shredder residues, railroad ties, petroleum coke, and California-designated hazardous waste.
SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PRACTICES
Council on Sustainable Biomass Production
- TSS provided technical assistance to the Council on Sustainable Biomass Production while the membership sought to develop a U.S.-specific standard for sustainable biomass utilization for power and transportation fuels.
Blodgett Forest Research Station
- TSS has teamed with the University of California College of Natural Resources and the Placer County Air Pollution Control District to conduct forest biomass recovery and air emissions data. The university’s Blodgett Forest Research Station is the location for much of the peer-reviewed research.
Rancho Guejito
- TSS is working with a major private landowner in the San Diego area to assess the impacts of the 2007 Witch Creek Fire and to identify appropriate conservation management tools to restore the fire damaged landscape to a more fire resilient state. A number of sensitive wildlife species reside on the property that are dependent upon healthy rangeland and forest ecosystems.
LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATORY REVIEW AND STRATEGY
Placer County Air Pollution Control District
- TSS is part of research effort to confirm the GHG benefits of forest biomass power generation. Sponsored by the Placer County Air Pollution Control District, the objective of this research effort is the monetization of GHG benefits associated with forest fuels reduction and biomass power generation.
Bioenergy Association of California
- TSS, a founding member of the Bioenergy Association of California, plays an active role in assessing bioenergy-related legislative and regulatory initiative in the state of California as part of the BAC’s collaborative working groups.
Chama Peak Land Alliance
- TSS is providing technical support to the Chama Peak Land Alliance as they seek to develop forest biomass power generation consistent with New Mexico’s Renewable Portfolio Standard.
